Back Pain Q & A

What causes back pain?

Your spine bears significant stress as it moves and supports the weight of your upper body. The stress often leads to overuse injuries (from frequently repeating the same movement) or a traumatic injury due to athletic activities, a fall, or a car accident.

As you get older, chronic health conditions and years of wear and tear lead to painful back conditions, such as:

  • Herniated discs
  • Facet joint arthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Bone spurs
  • Thickened ligaments
  • Slipped vertebrae (spondylolisthesis)
  • Vertebral compression fractures
  • Pinched nerves (radiculopathy)

Some people have ongoing pain after back surgery, a condition called failed back surgery.

What other symptoms accompany back pain?

Back pain ranges from a dull ache to a sharp, electric-shock pain. Your pain may be constant, come and go, or occur during certain movements. All back pain can be debilitating, no matter what form it takes.

If you have a pinched nerve, you may also experience pain, tingling, or burning that goes down your leg. Excruciating pain that suddenly shoots down one leg is one of the hallmark signs of sciatica.

In severe cases, a damaged nerve can cause numbness or weakness in your leg and foot and affect bowel and bladder function.

How is back pain treated?

Back pain treatment begins with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroid injections, bracing, and exercise. If you still have pain despite conservative treatment, the team at Sunshine Spine and Pain Specialists, PLLC, can help.

As experts in pain management, interventional medicine, and physical therapy, the team offers a combination of treatments that target the source of your pain and provide significant relief. Your customized treatment plan may include one or more of the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Joint injections
  • Nerve blocks
  • Trigger point injections
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Spinal cord stimulation
  • Dorsal root ganglion stimulation
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Sacroiliac joint stabilization
  • Minimally invasive lumbar decompression (mild®)
  • Superion® Indirect Decompression System
  • Intracept® procedure
  • SpineJack®
  • Kyphoplasty
  • Sacroplasty
  • Regenerative medicine

Regenerative medicine includes platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and stem cell therapy. Platelets and stem cells are your body’s natural healing agents. When your provider injects a concentrated amount of one or both, they may accelerate healing, reduce inflammation, and regenerate new cells to replace damaged tissues.
